Expressive Typography

As the second day started, once again our faculty told us to write whatever emotions we are feeling on to the blackboard and along with that we were shown a TED Talk about typography and type design by Shiva Nallaperumal, he described his journey of becoming a type designer and him getting inspired by the history and other cultures, him trying to blur the gap between computer science and designing.

We were told by our faculty that we had to write words relating to the video and how were we feeling that day, and then we had to choose any five words from the sum of all the words written by all my peers and me, we had to come up with experimental typographic designs using those words, the words I selected were

  • UNIRONED
  • ON TOES
  • CURIOUS
  • TIRED
  • INTERSTELLAR

I came up with many different prototypes on paper before getting on to do it digitally, and we also had to take a peer review on our prototypes so it went through

  1. I came up with an idea for my first word 'unironed' which was pretty obvious and very predictable. The peer review I got for the design was that the letters could have been much more effortless.

  2. For my second idea, on the word 'on toes', I understood that i was being too illustrative with the types and experimental enough. The peer review I got were the the buttons for them didn't really make sense.  The literal toes make it too illustrative and It could have been slab serif.

  3. By the third one, I kind of got the idea of what should I be going for.  The peer review I got were that they liked how the letters are working but D's anatomy could be worked upon and the color scheme could be better and the bed could be removed.

  4.  As I reached for my fourth idea i got a strong sense that I was playing it too safe. The peer review I got were that they thought that is was too obvious.

  5. For the fifth one I went for a very less illustrative design.

  6. From this on I started to play with both the illustrations and typos

  7.  I was still not experimenting enough as the base line and the cap line both were intact and it would been had a illustration inside the font.

  8. This idea had two different variations but with a similar concept one of them was a bit realistic and other had a better readability.

  9.  And lastly i made a San serif font and i try to incorporate the fonts inside the illustration.
Then we were expected to digitally illustrate 3 of the designs, I saw potential in 3rd, 8th and the 9th design ideas. So i went ahead with them. The 8th design as it was into two parts I first went with the second half of the design, but that turned out to be every graphic and the readability and the legibility were compromised hence, i continued with the first part. I work upon all the feed backs and tired to improve them. And the next class I was up with the illustrations.
  1. I tried to in corporate the curiosity of looking into things, hence I used an eye as a subject of the typography. I added the redness of the eye as a gradient as the white colur in the foreground was not looking appealing.
  2. I worked on all the feed backs and improvised a bit with the colors and the negative space in the letters
  3. I was happy with how this typography came out to be, here I played with the meaning of 'on toes' as it suggest to be on an alert hence, I put out eyes looking out inside the Os
